Answer to Question 1

This occurs when one parent subtlyor not so subtlyundermines the other parent's efforts (such as changing curfew without consulting with the other parent). It also takes place when one parent interrupts the interactions of the other parent and child (such as following a divorce), when one parent is openly critical of the other's parenting styles or parenting activity, or when a parent ignores the other parent's request for assistance with a child's needs.

Answer to Question 2

The student should either promote or negate Parsons' perspective that families are best served by hard-working, self-confident, and competitive males as breadwinners and nurturing and supportive females as homemakers, especially as these roles apply to the three primary functions of families: to ensure that society has an ongoing supply of new members and to be a source of socialization, to provide economic support for family members, and to provide emotional support for family members.
