Answer to Question 1

Answer: The ideal answer should include:
1. Turner limits color to a narrow range of pale neutrals and blues, blending water into sky everywhere, but setting off by contrast the dark brown and black smudges of the bridge and speeding train slicing through the atmosphere.
2. Anshutz applies separate strokes of bright blues and oranges to create rippled water and a sky filled with reflected sunlight, smoke, and blast furnace fire. Darker shades of those colors are mixed and smudged into billowing trails of smoke from factory and boat stacks.
3. Both artists use color to create environmental special effects rather than for naturalistic representation of each scene.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: The ideal answer should include:
1. Both focus on monumental human and environmental disasters.
2. Both visualize or suggest apocalyptic endings.
3. Both concern human actions and culpability.
