Answer: The kachinas were believed to be agents in the transfer of power from the gods to men, whereas the Byzantine images were not thought to be invested with divine poweralthough they could encourage prayer.

Answer: It was closer to northern Europeans than Jerusalem or Rome was, and it developed a reputation as a site for miracles.
