Answer to Question 1

There is research that indicates that parents will commonly provide the same level of sex education to their children that they received from their parents. Parentchild sexual communication is also influenced by parents' perceptions of their own sexual knowledge, and the comfort level they have when discussing sexual topics with their children. In fact, one study found that when mothers did not discuss sexual issues with their daughters it was related to their self-perceived low levels of sexual knowledge and their discomfort with the topic (Jaccard, Dittus, & Gordon, 2000). The mothers were not only embarrassed to approach the subject but they were also afraid that they would be asked something they didn't know the answer(s) to. On the other hand, parents who feel that they have an adequate background in sexuality education, who feel knowledgeable, and who are comfortable with sexuality topics and issues are much more likely to communicate about sex often with their children (Jaccard and others, 2000).
