Answer: The goal was to put city dwellers in touch with their roots in nature and to evoke feelings of leisure and happy tranquility. The designers, Frederick Law Olmstead and Calvert Vaux, developed paths, fields, and wooded areas, with artificial gardens and lakes that appear natural, adorned with fake Greek ruins.
