Oil paint allows for flexibility of blending and reworking and does not require the immediacy of completion as do other media. Colors can be laid down next to each other and blended softly and seamlessly.

Oil paints consist of pigment compounded with oil. Historically, the most commonly used oils have been linseed oil, poppy seed oil, and walnut oil.
