Emotional infidelity includes secrecy such as meeting someone without telling one's spouse or partner, emotional intimacy such as confiding things one hasn't shared with their spouse or partner, and being mutually attracted to someone else. Emotional infidelity can be devastating to both married and unmarried couples. Many family therapists agree that affairs don't have to include sexual intercourse because emotional infidelity also violates expectations of trust in a committed relationship.
