Answer to Question 1

In a family-and particularly in a discussion about family communication- boundaries serve the purpose of affecting the flow of information within the system. Boundaries are essential, because they are what separate us (make us distinct) from our environment or from other family members.
Boundaries fall along a continuum. On one end are closed boundaries, where no information comes in or goes out; on the other end, there are open boundaries, where the transfer of information is so unobstructed that family members within the systems lose their identity. A family system's health is categorized by the degree to which the boundaries are permeable (White & Klein, 2002). In the closed boundary system the borders are so tightly closed that little or no information is allowed in or out of the family system. This type of a closed boundary is oftentimes seen in families where abuse occurs. In open systems information is allowed to freely come in and exit the family system. A certain level of open boundaries is necessary for the health and well being of families.
