The range chart measures the variation in the measurements; it is similar to a standard error chart. The mean chart, on the other hand, measures the central tendency of the measurements. Both the range and the mean should be monitored to assure product quality. The mean is important for obvious reasons: we must be close to the specifications on average. The range is also important because we cannot tolerate too much overall deviation.
