Use a simple regression model to test the hypothesis: H0 : 1 = 0 vs. H1 : 1  0 , with  = 0.05

  What will be an ideal response?

Question 2

The supervisor of a production line believes that the average time to assemble an electronic component is 14 minutes. Assume that assembly time is normally distributed with a standard deviation of 3.4 minutes.

  The supervisor times the assembly of 14 components, and finds that the average time for completion was 11.6 minutes. Is there evidence that the average amount of time required to assemble a component is something other than 14 minutes? Use  = 0.01.

Answer to Question 1

MSR = SSR / 1 = 490, MSE = SSE / (n - 2 ) = 510 / 38 = 13.421
Thus, F = MSR / MSE = 490 / 13.421 = 36.51
Reject H0 if F  F1,n-2, = F1,38,0.05  4.08. Therefore, we reject H0 and conclude that the population slope is not zero.

Answer to Question 2

H0 :  = 14 against H1 :   14
Test statistic Z = (11.6 - 14 ) / (3.4 / 3.74 ) = -2.64
Since p-value = 2P(Z < -2.64 )  0.0083, reject H0 at  = 0.01. We conclude that there is sufficient evidence to disprove the claim that the average time to assemble an electronic component is 14 minutes. (The population mean appears to be less than 14 minutes.)
