Answer to Question 1

Using the matched pair procedure for dependent samples removes some of the variability in the sample data and provides a smaller confidence interval when compared to the independent sample procedure. For instance, when comparing the speed of a new tennis ball to a current ball, we can have each tennis player serve with the new ball and the current ball and measure the difference. By performing the matched pair procedure on the difference for each tennis player, we are removing the variability of speed due to individual differences between the tennis players. Eliminating this variability produces a smaller confidence interval and generates more precise results.

Answer to Question 2

P(X > 58 ) = P( Z > 1.28 ) = 0.50 - 0.3997 = 0.1003
