Diethylstilbestrol (DES) and similar nonsteroidal estrogens were in widespread use from 1946 to 1970 for treating mothers who were prone to spontaneous abortion and for treating various other obstetric problems. However, it was found that these drugs often caused developmental abnormalities in the genital tracts of women whose mothers took these drugs in pregnancy and induced malignant tumors in a small percentage of cases.

Why is it that dysmenorrhea does not occur when the cycles are anovulatory?
