Organ damage may be a direct and indirect consequence of hyperglycemia in which excess glucose glycosylates with the protein in the retina, peripheral nerves, and capillary basement membrane. These glycosylated proteins are hypothesized to undergo further interaction with other cell components, leading to blood vessel and organ damage.
