A catheter is inserted into the narrowed coronary artery and positioned at the site of constriction; a stent is inflated under high pressure to crush plaque and open up the arterial lumen; stent left in place allowing connective tissue and smooth muscle cells to grow through the mesh followed by the proliferation of endothelial cells. Drug-releasing stents may be used to reduce the rate of stenosis and plaque formation that may require redilatation.
