It occurs in conditions such as tumors, prolonged ischemia, hemorrhage, brain injury, and infectious processes. Focal hypoxia is associated with localized delivery of blood with inadequate oxygen, and cytotoxic edema is an absolute increase in intracellular fluid. Hydrocephalus is an abnormal increase in CSF volume in any part or all of the ventricular system.
