Answer to Question 1

Answer:

1. Oral (by mouth) is a same, common, convenient, and comfortable site for taking temperature. Normal oral temperature is 98.6F, or 37C.
2. Rectal (by insertion 1.5 inches into the rectum), which is the most accurate temperature. It is used when patients have trouble breathing, are weak or confused, are being given oxygen, or have paralysis of the face caused by a stroke. Normal rectal temperature is 99.6F or 38C.
3. Aural (ear canal) temperature is safe and accurate for patients who are less than 6 years old or have the same conditions mentioned above that preclude patients from using their mouths. Normal aural temperature is 98.6F or 37C.
4. Axillary (armpit) temperature is the least accurate and should be used only when other sites are not accessible due to clinical conditions. Normal axillary temperature is 97.6F or 36.4C.
