Acute myeloid leukemia with t(15;17)(q22:q12) is characterized by abnormal promyelocytes, which may have stacked Auer rods. Patients are most often young adults. When bundles of Auer rods are found in a cell, they are called faggot cells.

The cells in acute myelomonocytic leukemia are positive for CD13 (a myeloid antigen) and CD14 (a monocytic antigen).
