Answer to Question 1

ANS: D
Hb S, Hb A, Hb F, and Hb A2 would be seen. Hb A, which is not present in patients with homozygous Hb S, is from the transfused red cells. Hb F and Hb A2 are normal hemoglobins.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: B
Replacement of one nucleotide in the normal gene with a different nucleotide is a point mutation. This results in a different amino acid and can affect the protein's function.
