A deficiency of erythropoietin is the primary cause of the anemia found in chronic renal failure. The kidney is the primary site of synthesis for erythropoietin, which controls red cell production.

Myelophthisic anemia results when invading or infiltrating cells replace normal bone marrow cells. These invading cells may be malignant.
