ANS: D
A decrease in all blood cell counts in the peripheral blood is pancytopenia. Lymphopenia is a decrease in lymphocytes, neutropenia is a decrease in neutrophils, and leukopenia is a decrease in the white count.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: A
Polychromatophilic RBCs are reticulocytes when they are stained with a supravital stain such as new methylene blue; thus their obvious presence suggests the reticulocyte count will be increased. They also suggest that enhanced bone marrow erythropoiesis exists. They have nothing to do with either neutrophils or lymphocytes.
