Answer to Question 1

ANS: A
The cell count is (95 + 102 + 105 + 98)  20)/(4 mm2  0.1 mm) = 20.0  103/mL = 20.0  109/L. This count is elevated for an adult but normal for a newborn.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: A
A hematology analyzer does routine testing in an automated hematology laboratory. However, when counts are very low, including spinal fluid cell counts, and if the instrument is malfunctioning, manual cell counting is usually performed.
