Answer: Petechiae: purple pinpoint hemorrhages beneath the skin; typically seen in disorders of primary hemostasis
Purpura: fused petechiae; typically seen in primary hemostatic disorders mostly isolated from vascular disorders
Ecchymoses: bruises larger than 1 cm that closely resembles hematomas, but on the surface of the skin; typically seen in disorders of primary hemostasis
Hematomas: deeper anatomic bruising often associated with traumatic events, but also with hemorrhagic coagulopathies; typically seen in disorders of secondary hemostasis

Answer to Question 2

Answer: Malignancies contribute to insufficient and/or ineffective thrombopoiesis in the bone marrow. These lead to impaired production and/or function of newly produced platelets.
