Explain how the sensitivity and specificity of a laboratory test can be used to screen and confirm a differential diagnosis of anemia.

A patient sample had a retic count of 5 and hematocrit of 25. Normal hematocrit is 45. What other bone marrow test(s) could you perform to help determine whether the bone marrow is responding to the pancytopenia?

Answer: A highly sensitive test would likely be positive when the disorder is present. A highly specific test would be negative when the disorder is not present. Highly sensitive tests are good for screening for the disorder, and highly specific tests are good for confirming its diagnosis.

Answer: Biopsy specimens could examine cellularity of the bone marrow.
