Certification or registration means medical assistants have been trained to a standard required by the AAMA, which implies they have education that renders them able to behave ethically and legally and helps avoid patient injuries as well as breaches of patient confidentiality.

Vocational schools, technical schools, community colleges, and proprietary schools offer medical assisting education.
