The patient would benefit from a referral to a specialist if the patient needs the care of a specialist. The referral may also be needed in order for the patient to obtain payment for the services from his insurance company. If the patient asked why the primary care provider cannot see the patient for the condition being referred to a specialist, the medical office manager could tell the patient that the primary care provider feels the patient would be best served by a specialist who sees this type of condition on a daily basis.
