Genetic information can be used to invade an individual's privacy, may result in the changing of a person's self-image, and may damage an entire family's identity. It may tarnish our concept of equality by adversely impacting opportunities for education, employment, and insurance. On the other hand, genetic information may lead to treatments for diseases before they cause harm. It may advance the engineering of genes to remove harmful influences in the development process.
