Identifiable withdrawal signs and symptoms, altered family relationships, blackouts or amnesia pertinent to drinking episodes, and altered occupational productivity are all part of the diagnostic guidelines for the diagnosis of alcohol dependency. Increasing tolerance is also part of the diag-nostic criteria.

Physical debilitation and denial are not in the criteria established by the American Psychiatric Association for the diagnosis of substance abuse.
