Hypoparathyroidism results when the parathyroid glands are removed during a total thyroidect-omy. Chvostek sign (muscle irritability when the facial nerve is gently tapped) is consistent with hypocalcemia that occurs secondary to the removal of the parathyroid glands.

Medications that suppress appetite or block fat absorption may be used on a short-term basis. Or-listat (Xenical, Alli) inhibits lipase, causing fats to remain partially undigested and unabsorbed.
