  3. Be pleased that she was not diagnosed with HIV.
  4. Inform all sexual partners about the diagnosis so they can also be treated.

Answer to Question 1

Correct Answer: 4
For treatment to be effective, sexual partners of the infected person must also be treated. Implementation of safe sex practices, rather than avoidance of all sexual activity, is a more appropriate action. Birth control pills will not prevent disease transmission. Minimizing the patient's diagnosis is not therapeutic.

Answer to Question 2

Correct Answer: 1
The emergence of HIV/AIDS has created a kind of epidemiologic synergy among all sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Other STIs facilitate the transmission of HIV/AIDS, and the immune suppression caused by HIV potentiates the infectious process of other STIs. Individuals who are infected with STIs are at greater risk of acquiring HIV if they are exposed to the virus. The other responses do not provide the patient with necessary information about HIV risk.
