Changes in the ability to smell may be the result of damage to the olfactory nerve or to chronic inflammation of the nose. Zinc deficiency may cause a loss of the sense of smell. Rhinoplasty and a deviated septum are not identified as altering the sense of smell.

The rate and depth of respirations are controlled by respiratory centers in the medulla oblongata and pons of the brain and by chemoreceptors located in the medulla and in the carotid and aortic bodies. The number of alveoli will not affect respiratory rate and depth.
