The nurse should instruct a client with conjunctivitis to:
 
  1. use an eye patch until the redness disappears.
  2. keep their hands away from the eyes and not rub their eyes.
  3. wash around the eyes with mild soap and water.
  4. use over-the-counter eyedrops to reduce the redness in the eyes.

2. The bacteria or fungal organisms causing conjunctivitis are frequently spread by hand contact. Rubbing the eye causes further irritation.
3. Eye irrigation may be ordered to remove the purulent discharge associated with conjunctivitis.
4. Corticosteroid and topical antiseptics are used to treat the infection and inflammation.
