Answer to Question 1

Answer: 2

1. In type 1, insulin antibodies destroy the beta cells in the pancreas.
2. Type 2 diabetes mellitus is characterized by a lack of pancreatic insulin production and/or insulin resistance at the cellular level.
3. The liver does not destroy the insulin; it is an autoimmune reaction.
4. In type 1 diabetes mellitus, the client will need an outside source of insulin.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: 4

1. The client must be treated immediately for these symptoms of hypoglycemia.
2. The nurse would administer 4 oz of orange juice to avoid a huge increase in blood glucose.
3. Starting an IV is not needed, and 10 dextrose would raise the blood sugar too much.
4. The nurse should give the client three glucose tablets to reach appropriate blood sugar levels.
