Answer to Question 1

Answer: 1

1. Expiration is primarily a passive function where the muscles relax allowing air to flow out.
2. The chest wall muscles relax.
3. Pressures increase in the chest, allowing air to flow to the lower pressure in the atmosphere.
4. Ventilation is air movement in and out of the lungs.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: 3

1. Broken ribs would not affect the exchange of air in the alveoli.
2. A broken rib is not likely to hamper movement of the diaphragm.
3. During inspiration, the intercostal muscles pull the ribs up and out to allow for expansion of the chest. If ribs are broken, expansion will be lessened, and there is severe pain.
4. Broken ribs will not affect the movement of air in the bronchi.
