Before an electron beam computed tomography (EBCT) study is done, the nurse needs to determine whether the client:

  1. Is taking any antihypertensive medications.
  2. Has an allergy to iodine or shellfish.
  3. Is pregnant.
  4. Has any metal implants.

Question 2

A client tells the nurse that his recent blood work indicated his high-density lipids (HDLs) were 40 mg/dL and asks whether this is a good level. What should the nurse respond?

  1. HDLs should be lower than your cholesterol level.
  2. That is a good level. You must be eating healthy.
  3. You should ask your primary care provider to explain the results.
  4. It is desirable to have a level above 60 mg/dL.

Answer to Question 1

Answer: 3

1. This test is not contraindicated in those taking antihypertensive medication.
2. This test does not use contrast dye.
3. This test, which is done to detect calcium deposits in the coronary arteries, can be harmful to a fetus, and is contraindicated if pregnant.
4. This test is not contraindicated for metal implants.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: 4

1. HDL levels are generally lower than the total cholesterol level, but this does not provide the best answer.
2. The client's level does not necessarily indicate that the client is eating healthy.
3. Deferring to the primary care provider does not answer the client's question, although the client should be encouraged to discuss the results of the entire lipid profile.
4. It is desirable to have a level above 60 mg/dL is the most accurate statement.

Your skin wrinkles if you stay in the bathtub a long time because the outermost layer of skin (which consists of dead keratin) swells when it absorbs water. It is tightly attached to the skin below it, so it compensates for the increased area by wrinkling. This happens to the hands and feet because they have the thickest layer of dead keratin cells.
