Answer to Question 1

Correct Answer: 51.8
1.1 m2/1.7 m2 X 80 = 51.8 mg

Answer to Question 2

Correct Answer: 0.32

This is a multistep problem. First, the nurse calculates the child's weight in kilograms by dividing 35 pounds by 2.2 because 2.2 kg = 1 pound. The child's weight in kg is 15.91. 0.2 mg is to be given for every kg of body weight, so to determine the proper dosage, multiply 0.2 X 15.91 = 3.182 mg or 3.2 mg. The medication is supplied with 10 mg in every 1 mL. Using the ratio method, 10 mg:1 mL = 3.2 mg: x, 10 X x = 1 X 3.2. Divide both sides by 10: 10x  10 = 3.2  10 or x = 0.32.
