These tests are nuclear medicine procedures that are done together as a combination radioactive iodine uptake and a thyroid scan. Two radioactive tracers are given, orally and intravenously. The thyroid gland takes up the radioactive substances. The radioactive iodine uptake shows how well the thyroid gland is able to absorb iodine from the blood. The thyroid scan shows the size and shape of the thyroid gland.
