Answer to Question 2

The external ear is the appendage on the side of the head consisting of the auricle or pinna, the external acoustic meatus or auditory canal, and the tympanic membrane or eardrum. The auricle collects sound waves that then pass through the auditory canal to vibrate the tympanic membrane that separates the external ear from the middle ear.
The middle ear contains three small bones or ossicles instrumental to the hearing process. These ossicles are the malleus, incus, and stapes. These bones mechanically transmit sound vibrations from the tympanic membrane, to which the malleus is attached, through the incus to the stapes, which attaches to a thin membrane covering a small opening, the oval window, that marks the beginning of the inner ear.
The inner ear consists of a membranous labyrinth or mazelike network of canals located within a bony labyrinth. The bony labyrinth consists of the cochlea, vestibule, and three semicircular canals. Nerve endings in the form of hair cells located in various parts of the inner ear serve as receptors for the senses of hearing and equilibrium.
