It was caused by 1) greedy/ignorant homeowners 2) greedy mortgage brokers/Wall Street Executives 3) little governmental oversight.  Fixing it is still up for debate right now, but it would involve buying all the mortgage securities on the financial markets and then holding them in the US government, thereby freeing the public of this 'toxic' debt.

Community Reinvestment Act.
Where government officials forced mortgage lenders to make bad loans to poor people, so Bill Clinton would look good and feel our pain.

Then Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae buy these mortgages, and dress them up make a bundle for the CEO and sell them as bonds.

Now the same people that caused this financial crisis are left in charge to solve it.

Speaking as an American concerning the USA: at one time we were predominately a Christian nation.  That is not the case anymore.  In our zeal to be diverse, we have lost cohesiveness in many areas.  Therefore, without unity in beliefs and structure, we are struggling to define who we are as a people and therefore we are in a crisis on many fronts.
As for fixing it, I think we have gone past the point of no return, unfortunately.  We will go the route of the majority.

We need to assure that the price of labor stays firm with the cost of living otherwise we choke the economy. The people at the top make more money consistently if they do that than by trying to get it all at once by trying to save a buck in labor. We need to control cost of living or monopolies like Oil that could increase the cost of living single handed from one oil president to the next one.

Global Zionist bankers, Rockefellers, Rothschilds and others, took over our country when they put their Federal Reserve Bank and started printing our money and lending it to us at interest They began controlling our govt, our banks, got into our media and they essentially own our entire country. Their currency, the US dollar, has no value in relation to the world whose currencies do have value. Now that the Zionist money is being realized by other countries to have no value, it is being lowered in relation to other currencies. The Zionist therefore are losing power to China and Russia, who they don't control, so in order to compete with them, they have to destroy the US's middle class and it's standard of living and turn it into a slave wage, 3rd world type country, like China is. They also think the world is overpopulated for their taste and is harder for them to control it, so they have plans of reducing the population and creating a crisis like in the US where food becomes scarce, starvation will kill many, if not a nuclear war with Russia.

There's no way to fix the economic meltdown because it is so large, 1.5 quadrillion worldwide from derivative speculators, which is why we are having a meltdown encouraged and devised by the Federal Reserve bank. By getting rid of this bank or making into a govt office instead of it being privately owned would help repair our economy more than anything else.

Most of our work is outsourced besides the white collar worker . We consume twice of what we produce anymore . To fix it i would say buy American but that's not true anymore . Although its stamped ' Made In the USA  " You take that item apart and look at the components ,there all from china ,japan , mexico  anyone that has a cheap labor force . So that does no good . Big business is our downfall . Maybe just let them fall and start over but this time let the people run it as should be . After all it is our country
