The adenohypophysis (anterior lobe) secretes several hormones that are essential for the growth and development of bones, muscles, other organs, sex glands, the thyroid gland, and the adrenal cortex. It secretes the growth hormone (GH), adrenocorticotropin hormone (ACTH), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), prolactin hormone (PRL), and the melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH).
The neurohypophysis (posterior lobe) secretes two known hormones, the antidiuretic hormone (ADH) and oxytocin.
