Answer to Question 1

RICE is the preferred treatment for soft tissue injuries and muscle injuries. RICE stands for rest, ice, compression, and elevation. Ice causes vasoconstriction of blood vessels and is effective in diminishing bleeding and edema. Ice should not be placed directly onto the skin. Compression by an elastic bandage is generally determined by the type of injury and the preference of the physician. Elevation is used to reduce swelling. The injured part should be elevated on two or three pillows.
