1. Ventilation
 flow of air between the outside environment and the lungs
 inhalation is the flow of air into the lungs; brings in fresh oxygen
 exhalation is the flow of air out of the lungs; removes carbon dioxide
2. External respiration
 exchange of oxygen for carbon dioxide in the lungs
 oxygen moves out of the air sacs and into the bloodstream
 carbon dioxide moves out of the bloodstream and into the air sacs
3. Internal respiration
 exchange of oxygen for carbon dioxide at the tissue level
 oxygen leaves the bloodstream and enters the tissue
 carbon dioxide leaves the tissue and enters the bloodstream
