Question 2

Patient is a 12-year-old female who was recently diagnosed with epilepsy. She was started on medication, and her physician has been having difficulty adjusting her medications. Her mother has been monitoring the patient's condition, and administering the medications. The mother thought she was giving the medication as prescribed, but it appears that she (the mother) did not thoroughly understand a change that was made to the medication via a phone consult with the patient's physician. The mother realized her mistake when she called the doctor to tell him the patient was drowsy, complained of shakiness, slurred speech, and was vomiting. The patient was brought to the ED on her physician's advice; the physician told the patient's mother to tell us that she (the patient) had accidentally been given too much of the seizure medication (Dilantin) for more than a week. The patient vomited several times in the ED. She is being admitted for treatment.

  Dx: Accidental Dilantin overdose

   First-listed diagnosis: ________
