Patient is a 9-year-old boy who was bitten by a dog. The boy was in the park playing with friends when he was bitten. He was brought to the ED by his parents. Physical exam showed a rather nasty bite on his left thigh. The wound was cleaned thoroughly, and after careful examination, it was determined several of the teeth marks were large enough to require a few sutures, which was quickly accomplished. He was given a tetanus shot and a prescription for prophylactic antibiotics. A report was filed with the police department. The animal was already in the custody of animal control. The dog's owner produced proof of rabies vaccination, but the dog will be held until verification of the vaccination can be completed. The child was sent home in good condition. His parents were instructed on the signs and symptoms of infection, and they were asked to follow up with the child's pediatrician within three days.
