Most plans provide coverage for maternity-related expenses on the same basis as any other illness. The services normally provided in maternity cases include all routine, antepartum care (prior to delivery), delivery, and all routine, postpartum care (after delivery). The maternity CPT codes are based on this premise unless the specific code indicates otherwise. Therefore, if a physician itemizes charges for different segments, the charges should be combined and lumped together under the single appropriate code. This would apply unless the patient sees different doctors for antepartum care and for delivery or for any other combination during gestation. In such a case the benefits would be allowed in a way to compensate the physicians appropriately for their services.
