Answer to Question 1

A procedure that transfuses an ill patient with the stem cells taken from the peripheral blood of a person who is not ill (the donor). Stem cells are very immature cells capable of creating more than one type of cell. Nonmyeloablative means the procedure does not require destruction of the patient's bone marrow.

Answer to Question 2

Apheresis is a procedure that takes away (separates out) a single component of blood and returns the remainder to the patient. Apheresis may involve the removal of white cells, platelets, or plasma. Electrophoresis is a laboratory procedure that uses electrical current to separate protein molecules based on their molecular size and electrical charge. Apheresis is a treatment and electrophoresis is a laboratory method.
