Answer to Question 1

The term caf au lait is French, meaning coffee with milk, and is pronounced kaf' a  la. In medicine, it refers to a light brown color, or more specifically, light brown patches on the skin. Scoliosis may be associated with neurofibromas. Caf au lait spots are dermatologic manifestations of neurofibromatosis.

Answer to Question 2

Repositioning the lamina on one side of the vertebral body to relieve compression on the nerve is the preferred treatment because it does not affect the facet joint on the opposite side of the vertebral body.
