The parents need to understand that both dietary change and supplemental therapy are needed to correct this form of anemia. Calcium interferes with the absorption of iron, so milk should not be given at the same time. Injections must be given IM and are painful. In the past, nurses were instructed to offer liquid iron through a straw, to avoid staining the teeth. This is no longer required with all preparations, so check the insert before administration.
