Spasmodic croup is viral in origin with a sudden onset usually at night of a harsh, metallic, barky cough, sore throat, inspiratory stridor, and hoarseness. A gradual onset is indicative of laryngotracheobronc hitis. A high fever is not usually present.

Frequent swallowing is indicative of postoperative bleeding. Inspiratory stridor is characteristic of croup. Rhonchi are lower airway sounds indicating pneumonia. Assessment of blood cell counts is part of a preoperative workup.
