The infant with fetal alcohol syndrome may have microphthalmia or abnormally small eyes or short palpebral fissures, a thin upper lip, and a poorly developed philtrum. Children who have been emotionally abused may exhibit speech disorders, lags in physical development, failure to thrive, or hyperactive and disruptive behaviors. Opiates can cause these behaviors: detachment and apathy, drowsiness, constricted pupils, constipation, slurred speech, and impaired judgment.
