Lucy is a first-time mother and is concerned about what type of medications she is to receive during labor. She is in a fair amount of pain and is nauseated. Additionally, she appears to be very anxious.

You explain that opioid analgesics are often used with ataractics (analgesic potentiators) because: 1. The two together work the best for you and your baby..
  2. Ataractics help the opioid work better and they will help relax you and relieve your nausea..
  3. They work better together so you can sleep until you have the baby..
  4. This is what the doctor has ordered for you..

Answer to Question 1

2
1. Incorrect. A potentiator may cause the two drugs to work together more effectively but it does not ensure maternal or fetal complications.
2. Correct. Ataractics (potentiators) can be used to reduce nausea and vomiting that often accompany opioid use. Additionally, some ataractics decrease anxiety and apprehension and potentiate the opioid analgesic effects.
3. Incorrect. Sedation may be a related effect of some ataractics but is not the goal. Fur-thermore, it is unlikely that a woman would be able to sleep through transitional labor and birth.
4. Incorrect. This statement may be true, but it is not an acceptable comment for the nurse to make.

Answer to Question 2

2
1. Incorrect. There's always a little pain, certainly past the first year when recovery begins to peak.
2. Correct. Many couples have conflicting feelings regarding sexuality and future pregnan-cies.
3. Incorrect. Bittersweet grief describes the brief grief response that occurs with reminders of a loss, often at anniversary dates. Most couples never abandon it. Recovery is ongoing.
4. Incorrect. Typically a couple's search for meaning progresses from Why? in the acute phase to Why me? in the intense phase to What does this loss mean to my life? in the reorganizational phase.

Every flu season is different, and even healthy people can get extremely sick from the flu, as well as spread it to others. The flu season can begin as early as October and last as late as May. Every person over six months of age should get an annual flu vaccine. The vaccine cannot cause you to get influenza, but in some seasons, may not be completely able to prevent you from acquiring influenza due to changes in causative viruses. The viruses in the flu shot are killed—there is no way they can give you the flu. Minor side effects include soreness, redness, or swelling where the shot was given. It is possible to develop a slight fever, and body aches, but these are simply signs that the body is responding to the vaccine and making itself ready to fight off the influenza virus should you come in contact with it.
